Nutrition for New Mums โ and What to Do When You Can't Be There in Person
Victoria BurroughesI recently packed up a meal delivery for a new mum in Norwich, arranged and paid for by a friend of hers on the other side of the world. A few weeks later, another meal pack went out โ again bought by someone in Australia, for someone here. Neither of them could be in the room to help. Both of them found a way to make sure there was food in the fridge.
It's stuck with me, because it's such a simple, useful thing to do for someone โ and it doesn't come up often enough as an idea.
A few nutrition basics, kept simple
Pregnancy and the newborn weeks are not the time for restrictive eating or perfectionism, vegan or otherwise. A few nutrients are worth keeping half an eye on:
- B12 โ doesn't occur naturally in plant foods, so this one's worth discussing with a GP or midwife regardless of how well you're eating
- Iron โ lentils, beans, dark leafy greens, pumpkin seeds; pairing with vitamin C (a squeeze of lemon, some peppers) helps absorption
- Calcium โ tofu, tahini, fortified plant milks, leafy greens
- Omega-3 โ walnuts, ground flaxseed, chia
- Protein and folate โ both come fairly easily on a varied vegan diet, but worth a mention
None of this replaces proper advice from a GP, midwife or dietitian, who can look at your specific situation โ this is just the general landscape, not a prescription.
Why food is the thing that actually helps
Nobody in the newborn weeks needs a lecture on nutrients. What helps is not having to think about dinner. The Iraqi Lentil Soup is naturally iron-rich and sits well on a delicate stomach. The Oat Pots make a fortified breakfast that takes no thought at all at 3am. Meals arriving already made, already labelled, already portioned โ that's one less decision on a day when decisions are in short supply.
If you're not local, or can't be there
This is the part I want to flag properly: you don't need to be in Norwich to do this for someone. A meal pack can be arranged and paid for from anywhere โ Australia, apparently, being no obstacle at all โ and delivered straight to someone's door here. It's a genuinely useful gift for a new mum, but also for anyone going through a stretch where cooking has dropped down the list: recovery from illness, a house move, a hard patch.
